All vehicles under category M&N, sold after December 1, 2017 are required to be fitted with FASTag by the manufacturer of the vehicle or its authorised dealer, as per a Gazette Notification. To make availability widespread and maximizing existing vehicles to affix FASTags, government has made it mandatory to affix FASTag for issuance of National Permit (N/P). As many as 22 banks have been certified to issue FASTag across the country. Further, bank neutral FASTag ‘NHAI FASTag’ have been launched for easy availability at petrol-pump and on e-commerce site Amazon. By adopting these measures, the Government endeavours to increase penetration of FASTag substantially and moving towards 100 per cent cashless.
M&N vehicles refers to vehicles having at least four wheels and used for the carriage of passengers (e.g., standard car with two, three, four doors) and power-driven vehicles having at least four wheels and used for the carriage of goods, respectively. FASTag is a simple to use, re-loadable tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges and lets one pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction.
